  • 1 cup warm milk 110°F for yeast activation
  • 2.25 teaspoon active dry yeast one standard packet
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 3-4 cups all-purpose flour use enough for soft, slightly sticky dough
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 drops blue gel food coloring for iconic blue hue
Filling

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup crushed chocolate sandwich cookies like Oreos
  • 0.5 cup mini chocolate chips
Cream Cheese Icing
  • 4 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk to adjust consistency

Method
 

Making the Rolls
  1. Combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar in a bowl; let sit until foamy (5-10 min). Whisk in egg, yolk, melted butter, and vanilla. Gradually mix in flour and salt until a soft dough forms. Knead for 7-10 minutes until smooth. Let rise in a greased bowl for 1-1.5 hours until doubled.
  2. Mix softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, crushed cookies, and chocolate chips in a bowl until combined. Set aside.
  3. Punch down the dough and roll into a rectangle (16x12 inches). Spread the filling, roll into a log, and slice into 12 pieces. Place in a greased baking dish with cut-side up.
  4. Cover rolls with a towel; let rise for 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until creamy. Spread over warm rolls.
  6. Top with crushed cookies and extra chocolate chips. Serve warm.
