- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, whisk the egg and milk, then combine with dry ingredients.
- Peel and slice the onions into 1/4-inch rings. Soak in cold water for 30 minutes for added crispiness (optional).
- Remove the onions, shake off excess water, and dip in the batter, then optional breadcrumbs.
- Fry coated rings in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden and crisp. Don't overcrowd the oil.
- Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt while hot.
- Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
