Preparation Steps
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, toss together the apples, brown sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice along with cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, and pour into the baking dish.
- In another bowl, mix the flour blend, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until crumbly.
- Combine buttermilk and egg yolk, then add to dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Let rest for 10 minutes.
- Spoon the dough over the apple mixture, allowing some apples to peek through. Optionally sprinkle sugar or cinnamon on top.
- Bake for 40 to 55 minutes until bubbling and golden brown, covering with foil if it browns too quickly.
- Cool for 10-15 minutes on a wire rack before serving warm.
