Prepping the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla until smooth.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then add melted chocolate and hot coffee, stirring until smooth.
- Divide batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- To make the frosting, beat butter until creamy, gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa, then add melted chocolate and cream.
- Spread frosting between the cooled cake layers, then frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Decorate with mini chocolate chips or shavings before serving.
